The MSSM STEM Summer Camp is a place where bright minds explore the boundaries of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics while still relishing the joys of a traditional summer camp. MSSM STEM Summer Camp has a calculated blend of STEM classes and engaging afternoon and evening activities, offering an unparalleled experience for academically motivated students. No prior experience or knowledge is required, only a love of STEM.

Summer Camp Links

STEM Classes

Start your day by diving into our diverse selection of classes. Don’t worry, there’s no homework and no tests. Instructors assume you have nothing more than an interest in the topic and teach you from the ground up. These courses are taught by Maine teachers from around the state in small, interactive settings, providing an ideal environment for individualized learning. Classes are announced in April, but past classes have included CSI, 3D Printing, Intro to Programming, LEGO Robotics, Model Rockets, Underwater ROVs, Science Behind Art, Entrepreneurship, Escape Room, Build Your Own Board Game, and so many more.

Programming

An introduction to computer programming using a language called Processing. Campers will be guided through the design and creation of an interactive application using tricky geometry and simple graphics. What will we make? That’s up to you!

Modeling Career: 3D Printing

From toys to replacement parts, 3D printing is everywhere. Students will learn the best strategies for designing models for 3D printing. If you can imagine it, you can create it. Campers looking for an additional challenge may choose to incorporate battery-powered LEDs into their designs!

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

71 percent of the Earth is water. We haven’t even discovered everything on land yet, but there are armies of robots and vehicles exploring the surface of the Earth that lies below the waves. While Elon Musk and Patrick Stewart turn to space as the final frontier, our world’s oceans offer immense resources right at our fingertips if we can find them. In this class we will dive deep into the field of underwater vehicles: submarines, ROVs and more. We will first look at the physics of the ocean and the constraints it places on underwater exploration; then explore mechanics and mechanisms that allow engineers to overcome these restrictions; before finally designing, building and deploying our own underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs).

You can do the Cube

We will look at the math behind the cube, the algorithms, and you will learn how to solve the cube! Then students will choose a mosaic for the class to work on and by the end of the course we will have made a large mosaic made entirely from Rubik’s cubes!

Afternoon and Evening Activities

While mornings are for academic exploration, afternoons and evenings are all about traditional summer camp fun. Take part in sports, go hiking, engage in arts and crafts, and gather around the campfire for songs, stories, and S’mores. There are two afternoon activity periods with things like swimming, tie dying, bracelets, board games, Dungeons and Dragons (with a trained DM), Magic the Gathering, floor hockey, and more. We also have various week long tournaments that conclude with a trophy for the winner.

At the MSSM STEM Summer Camp, we're all about a balanced and fun-filled experience. Beyond our engaging classes, we offer diverse afternoon and evening activities to keep campers entertained.

In the afternoons, there's a range of options for campers to enjoy. From classic games like capture the flag to swimming, NERF wars, duct-tape art, tie-dye, and rock climbing, there's something for everyone. We also provide time for campers to relax, whether it's writing home, reading, or playing board games.

Our evening program is equally fun, with activities that foster a sense of community. Family Olympics, board games, Monster Night, and a camp talent show are just some examples. Special theme days, like Super Hero Thursday, add excitement, allowing campers to express themselves before the evening's monster-themed activities.

Friend Friday encourages campers to connect through activities, building lasting bonds. At MSSM STEM Summer Camp, we aim to provide top-notch education while creating a memorable and enjoyable summer for every camper through our diverse activities and theme days, ensuring cherished memories and new friendships.

That's why we're committed to making our high-quality education accessible to all academically motivated students. We offer a range of financial aid and scholarship options to help ease the financial burden. You can find detailed information about these opportunities on our website.

Additionally, for your convenience, we offer a reliable bus service to and from South Portland. The bus fare is $30 each way, and you can secure your spot by signing up through our CampDoc software. Please note that the bus service deposit is non-refundable. We believe in making your journey to our school as hassle-free as possible, so you can focus on your education and personal growth.

MSSM STEM Summer Camp's bus service provides a convenient and cost-effective way for campers to travel to and from South Portland each camp week. Whether you're a new or returning camper, the bus is a practical transportation option.

The $30 one-way fee may seem like an extra cost, but many families find it valuable. It's non-refundable, so plan ahead. Families who drive for drop-off often choose the bus for the return trip, allowing campers more time with new friends.

The bus ride home is a chance to bond and share week-long STEM adventures. It adds extra fun to the camp experience. The bus stops in Houlton, Orono, Newport, Augusta, Lewiston, and South Portland (Maine Mall), ensuring access for campers from various Maine regions.

Details like specific times and locations will be shared closer to camp. Overall, MSSM STEM Summer Camp's bus service offers a convenient, social, and budget-friendly travel option, making it a popular choice. We're excited to welcome new and returning campers for another summer of STEM adventures!
